About Manitou

In Ojibwa Manitou means spirit-the perfect name for this graceful, classic wooden yacht that has sailed the waters of Lake Superior for almost 30 years. Build in 1968 in Taipei, Taiwan; she is a 33' Acadia ketch. Manitou was designed by the famous naval architect Winthrop Warner. She was built with old world charm in classic yacht style-from her distinctive "bright" work hull (varnished Honduras mahogany planking) to her teak decks, gleaming brass lamps up to her bowsprit complete with the traditional dolphin catcher. Her unique bright work hull and spars couples with historic graceful lines make her a head-turner whatever port she is in.

As a full keeled wooden yacht weighing in at over 20,000 lbs. Manitou is a safe, sturdy, "hell-for-stout" vessel. The spacious cockpit easily accommodates 6 passengers, with space to relax above and below, a bathroom (or 'head' as we call it) stove and other amenities.

Considered by many to be the loveliest wooden boat in the Apostle Islands, she has twice won Best of Show at the Antique and Classic Boat Show Rendezvous from the Blue Water Boat Guild. She has also been featured as a "calendar girl" for Wisconsin tourism and can often be found in travel brochures featuring the Bayfield area.
